Charlie Hunnam Drops Out of "Fifty Shades of Grey" Movie

Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Charlie Hunnam is no longer going to play Christian Grey, the young businessman with a taste for bondage sexual practices in the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

The studios behind the film, Universal Pictures and Focus Features, released a statement on Saturday, stating “The filmmakers of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule, which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” reports Entertainment Weekly.

Hunnam, 33, has been the star of the FX hit show Sons of Anarchy since 2008 and the season 6 premiered just last month.

The book’s author E.L. James followed up the announcement with well wishes for Hunnam and a sign of no hard feelings for his departure.

“I wish Charlie all the best. x,” she tweeted today.

The film, set to open August 2014, will focus on Anastasia Steele, a college student who has a sexual awakening at the hands of Grey, and will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

There has been no word on whether this will affect the casting of Dakota Johnson, 24, as Anastasia.

“I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey,” James tweeted Sept. 2 when the castings were announced.
