Japanese Cosmetics Line Recalls Defective Skin Products

George Doyle/Stockbyte/Thinkstock(TOKYO) -- One of Japan's largest cosmetic lines is recalling skin products after reports of users getting white blotches on their faces.

Cosmetic company Kanebo says the ingredient Rhododenol claims to whiten aging skin, but women who used the products say they created white blotches on their skin.

Complaints forced Kanebo to recall 450,000 products a few weeks ago. Since then, the company says more than 2,200 customers have come forward, complaining of discoloration in their skin.

Thirty-nine cases of depigmentation have been confirmed so far, but hundreds of thousands of products are still in use.

Kanebo used Rhododenol in nearly five dozen of their products, including a line known as "Blanchir Superior" or "Superior whitening." The company says the ingredient was cleared by Japan's health ministry after extensive testing.

This is Kanebo's first recall and the company is offering to pay for medical costs associated with fixing the blotched skin.
