By Rob Sussman, WJBD News

The City of Centralia has announced two large cleanup events scheduled for the month of October. This year's Keep Centralia Beautiful Fall City Wide Cleanup Event will take place on October 19th. The event will be preceded by a City Wide Cleanup Week scheduled to take place October 7th through October 11th.

The Keep Centralia Beautiful Event scheduled for the 19th will begin with all individuals or organizations interested in volunteering meeting in Fairview Park at 9:00am. Bags will be provided along with vests, gloves, and tongs for all volunteers.

Bev Virobik is the coordinator for the Keep Centralia Beautiful Event as well as the Clean and Green Recycling Center. You may contact her about the Volunteer Event on the 19th by calling 532-8430.

The City Wide Cleanup Week taking place between the 7th and 11th will be a curbside trash pickup service provided by the City of Centralia Public Works Department. Participation in the pickup service is limited to single-family residences , town homes, condominiums, and apartments that do not exceed four units per building. Any items not longer than five feet or more than 50 pounds left at the curbside will be picked up with the expection of:

  1. Yard Waste, including grass clippings, leaves, brush, and tree material.
  2. Household refuse/garbage that should be put out for normal collection.
  3. Large quantities of rock, concrete, or construction materials such as roofing, siding, or lumber (small quantities will be taken).
  4. Tires or paint cans.
  5. Large automobile parts, such as engines and transmissions.
  6. Lawnmowers or small engines still containing gasoline or oil.

The City asks that residents absolutely do not mix items with trash to be picked up on normal collection days and to not pile items on top of other items. if an unapproved item is on top of an approved item, your items will not be collected. Crews will not sort through material.

Residents are asked to place smaller items in a container such as a box or a bag, and to consider recycling any cardboard, glass, aluminum, or paper products at Clean & Green's Recycling Center located on West McCord Street.

Any items to be collected must be on the curb by 6:00am on your normal garbage pickup day. The route will only be covered once.

Any resident with questions about the week long pickup service may call the City of Centralia Public Works Department at 533-7623
