Electronic Recycling Up in Illinois

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - The state environmental agency says electronics manufacturers have recycled 50 percent more electronic waste since Illinois made it illegal to dispose of the material in landfills.

The Rockford Register Star reports that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is preparing a report for lawmakers with that conclusion.

The paper says the agency's 2012 legislative report will show manufacturers tracked by the state recycled nearly 40 million pounds of electronic waste.

Agency spokesman Andrew Mason tells the newspaper that the figure for the year before was around 26 million. That was the last year before the ban, which took effect in January of 2012.

Mason says it's clear that the ban as well as outreach to communities and manufacturers has had a positive impact.
