I-64 Accident In Jefferson County Claims Life of Tennessee ManA 36-year-old Chattanooga, Tennessee man is dead following a two vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in the construction zone between the Woodlawn and Route 15 Exit in Mt. Vernon.
State Police identify the victim as Adam Smith. His van failed to reduce speed for a traffic back-up due to construction and ran into the right rear corner of a trailer being pulled by a semi. A passenger in Smith's van, 33-year-old Matthew Fitzgerald of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was seriously injured. He was initially taken to Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon and then flown to St. Louis University Hospital.
The driver of the semi, 51-year-old Roger Laughlin of Wright City, Missouri and a passenger in his rig, both escaped injury.
The wreck occurred at 1:01 Thursday afternoon. The investigation into the accident is continuing. Eastbound traffic on I-64 had to be detoured off the Interstate until the wreckage could be cleared.
