Illinois State Police Probe Arrested Man's DeathBENTON, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer in the southern Illinois village of Buckner is suspended as state police investigate the death of a man after his arrest.
Franklin County authorities cited the probe in withholding details of Roy Barnhart's death at a hospital after his arrest early July 7.
Authorities say Barnhart was taken to a hospital from where he was arrested for reasons that have not been made public.
Franklin County State's Attorney Evan Owens says he has asked state police to investigate. As a result, the Buckner officer is suspended pending the inquiry's outcome or a disciplinary hearing. A worker in the Franklin County State's Attorney's Office said Friday the prosecutor was out of the office and unreachable for comment. Calls to the coroner's office went unanswered.
