Kell Men Crushed By TruckTwo Kell teens working on a pickup truck in a pole barn were injured when the two jacks holding up the truck slipped and fell on them.
Kell Fire Chief Lonnie McDaneld says 18-year-old Cody Johnson and 18-year-old Cole Dodson were taken to Good Samaritan Health Center in Mt. Vernon and Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon for treatment of chest pains. Original plans were to air lift at least one of the two to a St. Louis Hospital, but weather conditions prevented the medical helicopters from flying.
McDaneld says the incident occurred in a pole barn on the property of Johnson's step-father Stan McCarty on the 54-hundred block of Kell Road. McCarty was immediately notified by the girlfriends of the two victims who were watching them work. McCarty was able to jack the truck back up so the two could get out.
The heavy rain Sunday morning may have played a role in the accident, as the dirt floor in the pole barn had become slippery. A sheriff's deputy on the scene reports the injuries may have been worse if the truck had fallen all the way to the dirt floor. Instead it fell onto the tires from the truck that had been shoved underneath the vehicle.
The incident occurred around 8:30 Sunday night.
