More Illinois Prisons to Tweak Inmate Meal ScheduleSPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois corrections officials say they are expanding a program that changes the meal schedule for prison inmates.
WUIS-FM reports the program serves two larger meals a day, rather than three traditionally sized meals. The brunch and dinner schedule is already in place at two prisons and will be expanded to at least two more.
Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer says inmates like the altered meal schedule because sometimes breakfast can be served as early as 4 a.m. He says later, larger meals are more convenient for inmates and easier to prepare.
One watchdog group says inmates at Illinois River Correctional Center in Canton complained about portion sizes. Shaer says the complaints are baseless because all inmates receive calorie totals as directed by state dietitians.
