NRC Feeling Impact Of Shutdown
10/10/2013 @ 4:19 PM(Rockvillle, MD) -- The fallout from the partial government shutdown is extending to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The NRC oversees safety at the country's commercial nuclear reactors and on Thursday, it will shut down most of its operations. The NRC on Wednesday announced it has postponed upcoming public meetings about extended storage of spent nuclear fuel. Those meetings were slated to take place October 15th in Ohio, October17th in Minnesota and October 24th in Illinois. The NRC says it intends to reschedule the meetings after the shutdown is resolved. Up until this time, the NRC has continued to operate on unused funds from previous appropriations but the agency says it is shutting down and on Thursday will start scaled-down operations which focus on immediate public safety and security issues.
