Organizations Pay Memorial Day Tribute in CentraliaDozens of area residents and organizations met together Monday morning in Hillcrest Memorial Park in observance of Memorial Day. Hillcrest Memorial Park President Mike Sutherland greeted the many veterans and spectators. Sutherland says the annual event is an important one. "It's the opportunity to give back to the veterans in this area and the ones who have given the ultimate sacrifice, just being able to remember them this time of year," Sutherland said.
Representatives from each of the organizations presented wreaths in honor of fallen American service members. The guest speaker for the service was James Price, grandson of the late Jim Wham. Price quoted from Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Harrison on the topic of war. Price then summed up the reason for Memorial Day. "No matter how just the conflict, righteous the cause or the size of the victory, there will always be one constant and tragic result. Young men and women are killed. They lose their lives protecting the freedoms we hold so dear. Today is Memorial Day: A day we as survivors have set aside to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice," Price said.
A 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps concluded the morning service.
