Salem High School Names Teacher of the Year

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

The Salem High School Teacher of the Year is Mary Walker.

The retiring English teacher and Chair of the English Department was surprised with the honor at the close of school year breakfast Thursday morning.  "I was really shocked and taken aback.  I have a list of reasons in my head on why I shouldn't have received the award.  I think we are pretty tough on ourselves as teachers.  I'm definitely very tough on myself and pretty self critical.   I also looked around the room and compiled a list in my mind of the teachers that I thought should receive the award or could receive the award. It's too bad we can't divide the award among all of us," said Walker.

Walker is retiring this year after 26 years at Salem High School.  Principal John Boles commended Walker for her work to implement the common core standards in the English Department and across the curriculum at Salem High School.

The annual award is presented by the Salem High School Academic Foundation.  They present a $500 check to be used by the teacher in their classroom or department.  The Salem High Education Association presents a $500 check to the teacher.
