Salem Motorcyclist Hurt When Cycle Hits Turning SemiA 26-year-old Salem man received serious injuries Thursday morning when his motorcycle collided with a semi on Illinois Route 161 west of Myers Road east of Centralia.
State Police say Thomas Bivens, Junior was westbound when passing a semi that had slowed down to make a left turn into the AT&T Service Facility. The cycle struck the front driver side of the semi as it made its turn. The impact caused Bivens to travel into the roadside ditch on the southside of Illinois Route 161.
Bivens was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper overtaking on the left side.
The driver of the semi, 44-year-old Terry Lewis of Carbondale, escaped injury.
