South Central School Board Discusses Deficit

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

The South Central School Board has voted to reinstate transportation to extracurricular activities.  Superintendent Rick Bachelor says the original decision to cut the transportation was made last spring when it appeared the state legislature would make even more cuts in school funding.   Since that didn't happen, Bachelor says the board decided to add the $71,000 expense back into the budget.  The decision means the anticipated deficit in the tenative budget for the current school year will increase from $85,000 to $156,000. Bachelor notes that is much better than the $600,000 deficit the board feared the district would be facing.

The board has also restored junior high softball following a successful fund raising effort.  Bachelor says that only leaves junior high track in the spring as the only sport where outside funding has not yet been provided to continue the program following board cuts.

The South Central School Board has hired Blake Korte of Pocahontas as its new junior and senior high band director.  In other personnel news, Wendy Reid was recalled to the support staff, approved Denton Brasel as a volunteer middle school basketball coach and a leave of absence for elementary teacher Bre Milano.

The board approved the purchase of catastrophic accident insurance for all student athletes at the junior and senior high at a cost of $535 a year.  The insurance is required under a new state law just signed by the Governor.
