United Methodist Children's Home's Youthbuild Program to Shut Down Area LocationsThe United Methodist Children's Home's Youthbuild of Jefferson and Marion Counties has not received U.S. Department of Labor Funding for the fiscal year beginning July first.
The Vice President of Community Services Sarah Usery says they plan to resubmit the grant proposal next year and are looking into alternative funding sources to continue the program. The program provides GED Classes, life skills and work skills programming to young adults between 17 to 24 years of age in the two counties.
64 young adults without a high school diploma would have been helped if the grant had been continued another two years. In the upcoming weeks, YouthBuild will be closing its locations in Mt. Vernon and Centralia.
Three employees were laid-off, three were placed in other UMCH programs, and one employee is still employed through YouthBuild to conduct follow-ups for the recent YouthBuild participants. YouthBuild Program Manager Ryan Alton and Construction Trainer Jim Collins will now be solely working in the Helping Hands program.
Helping Hands employs YouthBuild and CiviCorps participants and young people at the start of their career. Crews are led by skilled tradesmen experienced in all aspects of construction. Jobs range from cleaning out gutters to major construction: carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing. YouthBuild partnered with the City of Mt. Vernon, City of Centralia, Rend Lake College, Kaskaskia College, churches, and non-profit organizations. Three houses in Mt. Vernon and two in Centralia have been renovated since 2007.
