Cougars Win Second Straight NTC Regular Season Crown
Noah Powless opened the scoring with a three-run blast in the third inning. Tyus Holmes followed two batters later with a solo shot, and Brett Harmeier added a lead-off homer in the fifth inning.
South Central took a 5-0 lead in the third inning, added two in the fifth, and another in the seventh.
Kyle Bray had three hits and scored twice for the Cougars. Holmes added a double and Harmeier finished 2-4.
South Central Head Coach Curt Jones talked about the Cougar offense.
"Well, we did have some timely hits, but they helped us out by putting a lot of base runners on for us. We had some bad-hop singles and I don't know how many times we walked."
The Indians scored four runs over the final two innings to make it interesting, but fell short in their comeback bid.
Tyler Ross pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Ross walked five and struck out three.
Jones felt the senior southpaw was showing fatigue toward the end.
"I think Tyler got tired obviously there in the sixth, and I may have stayed with him too long, but we have another game tomorrow [Friday] and another one the beginning of next week. And he had the big lead til the two-run homer. That's kind of automatic. We gotta get someone else in. But overall, he threw pretty well, I thought."
The Cougars won the National Trail Conference regular season title and improved to 8-3 this fall. South Central hosts North Clay Friday at Kinmundy Lions Field.
