Freshmen Lead Salem at LawrencevilleThe Salem Wildcats boys cross country team won the first Lawrenceville Cross Country Invitational.
The Wildcats had four runners in the top ten and a fifth who placed eleventh.
For the first time this season, freshman Caden Owens led the pack and was the overall meet champion with a time of 17:04. Junior Brenner Webster was just three seconds behind to take second. Freshman Blake Quandt was sixth in 17:36, and was quickly followed by senior Quintin Goostree's 17:48 to finish in eighth place. Just missing a medalist spot was senior Caleb Willman, who finished eleventh with a personal best time of 18:18.
The win should put Salem ahead of Olney in the new state rankings. The Wildcats had entered the race in 24th place.
The Salem Lady Wildcats took fifth place at the Lawrenceville Invitational.
Emily Daniels led the Lady Cats on Saturday and was a medalist with a ninth place finish. Daniels' time was 21:49. Junior Esther Schwanemann was 15th overall with her time of 22:59. Freshman Cassie Bailey survived a fall early in the race to finish the course in 23:02, good for 16th overall. Christian Daniels battled sickness and finished 22nd.
Both Salem cross country teams travel to Chester today for their next meet.
