Lady Cats to Play for Title

The Salem Lady Wildcats advanced to the championship game of the 35th Annual Mattoon Girls Basketball Holiday Tournament, beating the host Lady Green Wave 60-59 Friday night.

The Lady Cats held Mattoon to just three points in the first quarter, and led 26-17 at halftime. But the Lady Wave stormed back in the third frame and even took a lead before Salem regained its composure and a 42-31 lead after three quarters. While Mattoon challenged Salem in the fourth quarter, the hosts never regained the lead and Salem held on for the one point victory after the Lady Wave scored a three-pointer at the buzzer when four points were needed.

Dearria Watson continued to score at a frantic pace, finishing with a game-high eighteen points for Salem. Kyla Cook added 10 points and Kailey Beer finished with nine for the Lady Cats, who improved to 9-4 with the win.

Salem will take on the only other undefeated team in the tournament when the Lady Wildcats face the Galesburg Lady Silver Streaks at 3:30 Saturday afternoon to decide the tournament champion.
