South Central Stumbles in NTC ConsolationThe South Central softball team made some noise in the
National Trails Conference Tournament last night, winning one game and nearly
claiming the consolation championship.
The Lady Cougars opened the action with an 8-3 win over St.
Elmo. South Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 7-0
before St. Elmo got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Abby King earned the
win, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out two. But
the were coming from all over the Lady Cougars’ line-up. King went 3-4 with
three RBIs and two runs scored. Macie Cain was 2-4 with a double and a homerun,
two runs batted in and three runs scored. Oceana Whitt had two triples and two
runs scored. Bailey Ritter had a single, double, and a run scored, and Mia
Campbell drove in a run on a base hit.
The win over St. Elmo lifted South Central into the NTC
Consolation game against tournament host Dieterich. But it was the Lady Maroons
who got the victory after a pair of late-game runs, as Dieterich won 7-6. The
Lady Cougars led 5-1 after three innings but gave up four runs in the top of
the fourth. The final runs in the game came for the Maroons, with one in the
sixth and one in the seventh. King allowed fourteen hits in taking the loss,
and South Central had just five hits. Cain went 2-4 with two doubles, two RBIs,
and a run scored. King had a double and three RBIs. Whitt scored three runs for
the Lady Cougars.
South Central is 4-11.
