Winter Weather Continues to Take Its Toll Around the Country

Stockbyte/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Eleven U.S. states from Texas to the Carolinas are bracing for yet another blast of winter weather. Officials in Georgia are determined not to repeat the mess they had two weeks ago when the entire Atlanta metro area was brought to a standstill by two inches of snow.

Authorities in Atlanta say the region could get up to two inches of snow and then a quarter-inch of ice on top of that, which has people greatly concerned.

There are more than a hundred salt and snow trucks in the city of Atlanta alone that are on the roads trying to pre-treat the roads, something that didn't happen two weeks ago.

Expecting high numbers of outages, Georgia Power, the large power utility for Atlanta residents, is calling in crews from all over the country.

Mississippi was the latest to declare a state of emergency Monday night. The declaration helps state and local officials quickly stock up on supplies ahead of the snow and ice storm.

"Normally, when we order it there's a delay in when we can get it, but we can get emergency procurement and then we can go and just pick it up ourselves; and that's what we've done," said Mark McConnell with the state's Department of Transit.
