49ers Acquire Cornerback Eric Wright From the Buccaneers

Scott Boehm/Getty Images(TAMPA, Fla.) -- As if the San Francisco 49ers needed more help on defense, they recently acquired cornerback Eric Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a conditional 2014 draft pick.

Wright's lone year in Tampa Bay did not go how either side expected. He played in 10 games last season, missing four games because of violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

To make matters worse, Wright was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence misdemeanor charge on July 12. The team had planned to release him, but found a trade partner in the 49ers.

"We are pleased to add Eric to our team," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said. "As an organization, we have done our due diligence and anticipate Eric working hard to contribute to the 49ers."

Wright now joins a crowded 49ers secondary that includes Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver, and Nnamdi Asomugha.

With the Buccaneers trading Wright, it shows they are confident that cornerback Darrelle Revis is close to being fully recovered from a torn ACL injury that caused him to miss 14 games last season.

Rookie Johnthan Banks is expected to start opposite Revis in the secondary now with Wright gone.
