Athletics Agree to Deal with Reliever Eric O'Flaherty

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif.) -- In a typical under-the-radar move by the team, the Oakland Raiders have agreed on a contract with free agent reliever Eric O'Flaherty. The deal is for two years and worth $7 million.

"He's been one of the best left-handers in the game over the last three years and proven he can pitch anywhere, including toward the end of the game," Athletics' assistant general manager David Frost said of O'Flaherty.

When healthy, O'Flaherty is among the best left-handed relievers in the game. The problem is that he's currently recovering from elbow ligament-replacement surgery after suffering a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow back in May while with the Atlanta Braves. Despite the excitement the team has over their latest addition, it is unclear when O'Flaherty will be available to pitch again for the team.

Over the past three seasons, O'Flaherty has a 1.45 ERA in 161 appearances, which is the lowest among relievers with 125 outings or more during that time.
