Cleveland Indians Signs Reliever John Axford
(CLEVELAND) -- The Cleveland Indians signed free agent reliever John Axford to a one-year contract on Thursday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Axford split last season between the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals, where he compiled a record of 7-7 with a 4.02 ERA. He struck out 65 batters in 65 innings of work.
Axford’s best season came with the Brewers in 2011, when he had 46 saves along with a 1.95 ERA. He’s expected to replace two-time All-Star Chris Perez, who left as a free agent.
