ESPN: Vince Wilfork Out for the Season with Torn Achilles
(NEW YORK) -- The defense of the New England Patriots has taken a big hit as ESPN and The Boston Globe are reporting that defensive tackle Vince Wilfork will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles.
During the team's 30-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons last night, Wilfork suffered the injury in the first quarter. He had to limp off the field during the Falcon's first drive of the game.
The 31-year-old Wilfork had 48 tackles last season, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.
Wilfork is one of the team's best players, and not just on the defensive side of the ball. He's been with the team since 2004, and has been a major presence ever since. He's been a perennial Pro Bowler during his time in the NFL, and has often been the anchor of the team's defense.
New England has the 18th ranked defense in the NFL, so it remains to be be seen how big of an impact his absence will have going forward.
