Former UNC Star P.J. Hairston Heads to NBA D-League

Brian A. Westerholt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  Former University of North Carolina swingman P.J. Hairston will resume his basketball career with the Texas Legends of the NBA D-League.

Hairston was suspended by the NCAA last month for rules violations and decided to leave the school.

The Legends held the No. 1 turn in the D-League's player selection process and used that pick on the former UNC star.

According to league rules, no NBA teams are allowed to call up Hairston this season because he is eligible to enter June's NBA draft.

As a sophomore at UNC last season, Hairston led the team is scoring at 14.6 points per game.  The school announced on Dec. 20 that they would not seek reinstatement for Hairston after his suspension was up.

Hairston, 21, said Friday that he enrolled in an online class at North Carolina.  He will balance the course with looking to improve his NBA draft stock.

"I am excited to continue to pursue my degree at UNC while also pursing my dream of becoming a professional basketball player," Hairston said.

The team is owned by Dallas Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson and coached by former NBA forward Eduardo Najera.  They are the Mavericks' D-League affiliate.
