Knicks' Carmelo Anthony Wants to Test Free Agency in Offseason

NBA via New York Knicks(NEW YORK) -- The 2013-2014 regular season hasn't even started, but New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has declared that he will test free agency once the season ends.

Anthony has the option to opt out of the final year of his contract, which is worth $23.3 million, in order to secure another long-term deal.

"I want to be a free agent," Anthony told the New York Observer. "I think everyone in the NBA dreams to be a free agent at one time in their career. It's like you have an evaluation period, you know. It's like if I'm in the gym and I have all the coaches, all the owners, all the GMs come into the gym and just evaluate everything that I do. So yes, I want that experience."

Anthony has plenty of reasons to stay with the Knicks. With the Knicks, Anthony can sign a five-year deal worth just over $129 million. If he signs with another team, he can only agree to a four-year deal worth just under $96 million.

In his 11th season in the NBA, and third with the Knicks, Anthony led the NBA in scoring with 28.7 points per game.
