Mayweather Defeats Maidana by Majority Decision
(LAS VEGAS) -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0; 26 KOs) defeated Marcos Maidana of Argentina (35-4; 31KOs) by majority decision in their WBA/WBC welterweight unification match on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 16,268 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Judge Burt Clements scored the fight 117-111 while judge Dave Moretti had the fight at 116-112, both for Mayweather. Judge Michael Pernick scored the fight even at 114-114.
Maidana, listed as a 12-to-1 underdog, took the fight to Mayweather from the opening round, landing overhand right hands to the top and the side of Mayweather's face. In the fourth round, he caused a cut above the right eye on the unbeaten champion. Mayweather would counter Maidana’s aggressiveness with a series of quick right hands and body punches.
According to CompuBox, Mayweather landed 230 of 426 punches thrown (54%) while Maidana connected on 221 of 858 punches (26%).
