Nadal is looking for his second US Open title. He won his first in 2010 beating Novak Djokovic.

Other notable winners on day one at the Open include, (4) David Ferrer, (8) Richard Gasquet , (1) Serena Williams, (3) Agnieszka Radwanska, (5) Li Na, (15) Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams.
