Norway Wins Gold, Silver in Women's Cross-Country Freestyle Sprint
(SOCHI, Russia) -- Norway's strong showing at the Winter Olympics continued after winning the Gold and Silver in Women's Cross-Country Freestyle Sprint on Tuesday.
Maiken Caspersen Falla took home the Gold with a time of 2:35.49. In a photo finish, Norway's Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg took the Silver with a time of 2:35.87 while Slovenia's Vesna Fabjan took home the Bronze with a time of 2:35.89.
The United States' Sophie Caldwell finished fifth in the event with a time of 2:47.75. She was attempting to be the first American woman to win an Olympic cross-country skiing medal.
Pre-race favorite Marit Bjoergen surprisingly was ousted in the semifinals along with Kikkan Randall of the United States, who was knocked out of the quarter-finals.
It was a bittersweet day for Norway's Astrid Jacobson. She finished fourth in the event after having her brother die on the eve of the games.
