Ogwumike Selected No. 1 in WNBA Draft

Justin Edmonds/Getty Images(UNCASVILLE, Conn.) -- The Connecticut Sun selected Chiney Ogwumike with the No. 1 overall selection in the WNBA Draft on Monday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Ogwumike becomes the second Stanford Cardinal taken with the top pick following her older sister, Nnemkadi, who was drafted by Los Angeles in 2012.

A 6'4" forward, Ogwumike was a consensus All-American for three straight years while helping Stanford to a 33-4 record, reaching the Final Four in this year's NCAA Tournament. She graduated as the leading rebounder (1,567) and scorer (2,737 points) in Pac-12 history, shooting a school record 58.9% from the floor in her career.

Chiney and Nnemkadi become the first pair of siblings ever to be selected No. 1 in the WNBA draft. They join Peyton and Eli Manning as the only siblings to be taken tops overall in any professional draft. Peyton was taken first by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998 while Eli was drafted No. 1 by the San Diego Chargers in 2004.

Moments after drafting Ogwumike, the Sun traded 2012 MVP Tina Charles to the New York Liberty for the fourth overall pick. That choice turned out to be Alyssa Thomas of Maryland.

Tulsa selected former Baylor Bear Odyssey Sims with the second overall pick followed by Notre Dame's Kayla McBride being chose by San Antonio. Rounding out the top five, the Indiana Fever selected Florida State's Natasha Howard.

The WNBA opens training camp on April 27 while the league's 18th season tips off on May 16. Ogwumike and her new team will be featured on opening day when the Sun take on New York.
