Rams Welcome Michael Sam to St. Louis
(ST. LOUIS) -- The Rams welcomed rookie defensive end Michael Sam to St. Louis on Tuesday.
The Rams selected the 24-year-old Sam out of the University of Missouri in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft. He is the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team.
“I’m blessed really,” Sam said at a news conference. “I want to thank my head coach, Coach Fisher, Mr. Kroenke and Mr. Snead, the general manager for just giving me the opportunity to play here.”
During his four-year career at Missouri, Sam had 123 tackles, 21 sacks and two interceptions. He was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year as well as a unanimous All-American in 2013.
Sam’s jersey is currently the second-highest-selling rookie jersey on NFL.com.
