Redskins' Mike Shanahan Considering Sitting RG3 Rest of the Season

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(ASHBURN, Va.) -- With the Washington Redskins falling further and further down the standings, head coach Mike Shanahan is considering sitting quarterback Robert Griffin III for the rest of the season to avoid an injury.

"I've got to do what's best for the organization," Shanahan said. "If we feel the best thing for the organization is doing that for Robert, then hopefully Robert will understand why we're doing it."

"We're doing it because he's a franchise quarterback and we want him to be able to go into the offseason and get full preparation and be ready for next year rather than playing one of the next three games and all the sudden he sets himself back with a possible injury, whatever that may be," he continued.

After 14 weeks, the Redskins sit at 3-10 and are in last place in the NFC East. Last season, they went 10-6 and won their division.

With more and more crticism being hurled at the team, Griffin has struggled in his sophomore season after coming back from a torn ACL.

Kirk Cousins would start for Griffin if Shanahan decides to bench him.
