Suns' Rookie Center Alex Len Expects to Play in Season Opener

National Basketball Association(NEW YORK) -- If the Phoenix Suns want to compete in the Western Conference this season, they'll need all the help they can get, and they should expect to have rookie center Alex Len playing on opening night.

Len didn't workout for teams leading up to the draft after undergoing ankle surgery prior to the combine. He was still thought highly enough by the Suns to select him fifth overall.

As it turned out, Len needed to undergo a second surgery to ensure his recovery. Despite the surgeries, Len expects to be ready when the season begins.

"I've got two more weeks of rehab and then I'll be back about 85-90 percent," Len said. "I'll be back for training camp and be ready for the season. The ankle's feeling great. I have no pain."

Last season at Maryland, Len averaged 11.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He was considered one of the best players in the draft, but his surgery scared off some teams.

The Suns are coming off a disappointing 25-57 season, their worst mark since the 1968-69 season, which was their first season in the NBA.
