Tonalist Ends California Chrome's Triple Crown Bid by Winning Belmont
(NEW YORK) -- Tonalist won the 146th Belmont Stakes, stopping California Chrome from becoming the 12th horse from winning Horse Racing's prestigious Triple Crown.
Tonalist becomes the fifth horse in the last eight years to win the Belmont after not racing in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
California Chrome finished in a tie for fourth as he becomes the 12th horse since 1978 -- when Affirmed won it -- to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown only to lose the Belmont.
Chrome's jockey Victor Espinoza was in position to win the Triple Crown in 2002 with War Emblem before coming up short in the Belmont.
Commissioner finished in second and Medal Count came in third.
