UCLA Takes Home First College Baseball World Series Title

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images(OMAHA, Neb.) --  Eric Filia drove in a career-high five runs, as UCLA topped Mississippi State 8-0 Tuesday night, giving the Bruins their first national championship in baseball.

"They worked extremely hard all season," UCLA head coach John Savage said. "They believed in each other and that's what great teams do."

UCLA has now wone a NCAA record 109 national championships in team sports.

The Bruins sweep the Bulldogs in the best-of-three series, after having beaten them 3-1 on Monday.

Once again UCLA's pitching was dominant. Nick Vander Tuig pitched eight-innings allowing five hits and striking out six in the win. The Bruins finish the series having allowed four runs in five games, a College World Series record since metal bats started being used in 1974.

Starting pitcher Adam Plutko won the CWS Most Outstanding Player award. Plutko won UCLA's first game of the CWS against LSU and then won Game 1 in the finals. In all, Plutko pitched 13 innings, allowing two runs and striking out four.

"It feels good," Plutko said. "I'm just excited to bring another one back to Westwood."
